I went to see Inglourious Basterds with Jo today. After the film, people actually applauded and one inbred yelled "that was the best film I've ever seen".
Roger Ebert also gave it four stars and stated that its possibly the best film of the year.
As for me, I was unmoved. It was perhaps even mediocre.
The subject matter didnt really do it for me. It was a ficticious account of a group of Jews out to kill Hitler. And in the end, a bunch of high ranking Nazis, including Hitler, are in a theater and these Jewish soldiers and the Jewish theater owner burn it down and end WWII.
I dont know. I didnt find it inspiring, though-provoking, or even entertaining. If anything, I just thought how preposterous the whole thing was and that in real life, the Jews gave little to no resistance against the Nazis.
But that aspect aside, I just...it wasnt a clever film. Ebert said he had to watch it twice so I figured it was like one of those movies that's really complex and you don't get it the first time. Like there are subtle clues in the beginning that you need to better appreciate the entire film. Can't think of a good example, but you know what I mean.
So yeah, I paid careful attention to anything. But there was no need. It was totally straight-forward. Nothing came together in a particularly clever way. It was a bog standard movie.
It was also full of gratutidous violence. I believe this disensitised the viewer and debases society as a whole. It glorifies being an abusive, violent asshole.
I like films that make you think. This wasnt one of those. 1.5/4 stars for me.
