A persons class position is basically defined by their relationship to the means of production. So Richey's parents, as small businesss people, or people who owned the modest means of production that they earned a living from, were middle-class. Petit-bourgeois. Whatever. The people they employed (if any) will have been working-class.
I wouldn't have thought that was controversial. But of course, the terms can be quite nebulous when used outside of a strictly Marxist definition, and can encompass various other indicators.
So . . . when you use the term 'middle-class' in this context, what do you mean by it?
