It's not a program i've become particularly enamoured with, I have to say. It's a mixture of satirical and surrealist sketches, interspersed with Sayle's angry monologues. Very similar to The Armando Iannucci Shows in terms of format, actually, but not quite as irreverant or inventive. A lot of it is topical - even though Sayle criticises topical comedy in one of his tirades - and what with it being twenty years old, it hasn't aged well. It also has some really grating comedy musical numbers. I just don't find it that amusing. I also went off Sayle somewhat when I read that he'd criticised Liverpool, the place of his birth, as a 'city of Philistines'. I'm not even from Liverpool, but I was offended on it's behalf. What an arrogant, prejudiced, reductive thing to say. There were only eighteen episodes made, spread across three seasons, and so far it's taken me about six weeks to watch nine of them. Because most nights I just can't face sitting through it. 'Why watch it at all?', you may well ask. Well, I bought it (or got it given as a gift, actually), so I may as well. And at least i'll be able to say that i've seen it, and that I didn't particularly enjoy it, should the topic ever arise at some posh dinner party, the likes of which i'll never, ever attend.
