Remember when you had to use boolean searches on search engines? Like using plus signs and minus signs and shit. "I want the word 'poop' but not 'feces' so I'll type '+poop -feces' ". It got more complicated than that, but thats the extent of my boolean knowledge.
I mean, I was in university at the time and professors and nerdy students would say "you better learn this boolean stuff if you ever want to get good search results".
But how long before that shit became obsolete? Pretty quickly. When Google came out, at least.
Actually, they probably werent the innovators. There was also Get Jeeves. Remember that bullshit? You could type in "Is Jeeves gay?" and the answer would come back with "no" or something. It was like an easter egg.
But yeah, certainly with Google you didnt have to do that shit. At least when I started using it, which wasnt actually that long ago. I was slow to adopt Google. I prefered Altavista.
All search engines today use just regular English, though. None of this boolean shit. MORE LIKE "POOLEAN"! AM I RIGHT?
Its like when my second grade teacher told us that we better learn the metric system because its going to be implemented soon and we wont know how to measure anything then.
Like you'll go to the shop and say "give me a 20 ounce can of Pepsi" and theyll just look at you funny because everybody uses milliliters or whatever now. And all Americans just instantly forgot the old King James or whatever system. Except you.
I never learned that shit. And guess what? Theres still no ####ing metric system in the US. And wheres that teacher now? Dead and gone, I'd imagine. Dumbass nun.
And even in England, theres some metric stuff but also some King whatever stuff. I dont have a clue what the metric measurements are. Somebody says "it's 500 meters away" and I'm totally baffled. But then again, I dont think I'd be able to conceptualise 1500 feet either.
Anyway, the point is that even if you dont know how to measure things it doesnt really matter. I get by fine.
Theres all these doomsayers talking about how things are going to change and you better get with it and start learning. So the lesson here is just to ignore them. Boolean internet and the metric system...what a joke.
