This 2005 poll from Amnesty International found that:
- 34% of people in the U.K. believe that a woman is 'partially or totally responsible' for being raped if she acted in a 'flirtatious manner'. That's one in every three people, in a supposedly 'civilised' society!
- 30% of people in the U.K. believe that a woman is 'partially or totally responsible' for being raped if she was 'drunk'. That's more than one in four people, in a supposedly 'civilised' society!
- 26% of people in the U.K. believe that a woman is 'partially or totally responsible' for being raped if she was 'wearing sexy/revealing clothing'. That's more than one in four people, in a supposedly 'civilised' society!
There are fifteen to twenty million people in the U.K. who think there are certain circumstances in which a woman can be held responsible for being raped. Not a majority, but a substantial minority. And another Amnesty International poll, this time from September 2008 and taken among students (the best and the brightest, apparently) in Northern Ireland, found that:
- 44% of respondents answered that a woman is totally responsible or partially responsible for being raped or sexually assaulted if she is drunk.

- 46% of respondents answered that a woman is totally responsible or partially responsible for being raped or sexually assaulted if she has acted in a flirtatious manner.
- p.9
- 33% of respondents answered that a woman is totally responsible or partially responsible for being raped or sexually assaulted if it is known that she has had many sexual partners.
- page 10.
- 47% of respondents answered that a woman is totally responsible or partially responsible for being raped or sexually assaulted if she is alone and walking in a dangerous or deserted area.
- page 10 So a third to half of University students in Northern Ireland think there are certain circumstances in which a woman can be held responsible for being raped. Pretty astounding results, and worth showing to people when they start going on about the 'woman hating' nature of 'moslem cultures'. Europe is kidding itself if it thinks patriarchal and violent attitudes towards women have been anything like eradicated here. (And it's attitudes like these that mean only about 5% of rape court cases in the U.K. end in a conviction, with most not even coming to court at all) Mmm, civilised.
