A lot of very competent, capable, ambitious people, that once had aspirations to promote, have left this agency and will never return. Everything from correctional officers, to maintenance folks, chaplains, security supervisors and even some wardens have packed up and left. You would be very hard pressed to find a department that isn’t short handed on any unit.
The money is not the issue. Sure, more money is nice. That being said, when we signed up for this job we knew what it paid. None of us came here expecting to get rich. The issue is the way people are treated. You could double the salaries, for all TDCJ positions, and the shortage would still exist. I’m sure everyone that’s reading this knows TDCJ employees that left for jobs that pay less.
I don’t care if it’s a place of employment, a marriage, a friendship or a volunteer organization. The bottom line is this. When you mistreat people, use them and don’t have any respect for them, they tend to move on.
All of you young people, that don’t have a lot of time in the system, need to keep this in mind. There are a lot of folks out there that are looking to hire good, decent people that are trainable and aren’t afraid of hard work.
