Re: Have an honest question
You would be better off considering county jails than tdcj. We pass out "cold water" "continuously", allow "cooling showers" upon request, and escorts ANY offender to air conditioner "respite" areas if they feel too hot. Staff get nothing. The agency is so scared of the courts now that we are more worried about keeping offenders and their families happy that we no longer "correct", we appease. An offender can make a claim that you touched him (or her) setting off a fairly serious investigation into your "actions", usually because they don't want to be searched or you wrote them a case. I would not recommend this job to anyone, ever. When I get my time completed I'm out of here the day of. I wish I had never started. I'm too far invested time and life wise to reverse. I regret the last 21 years completely, had I known 10 years ago what I know now I would have left when I had the chance. Now I'm too old to start over, and every day is a beating. Stay away. This is not anything like you remember. I feel sorry for the kids coming in now, but at least most of them leave soon after because they can see the problems. Retention is a "goal" but job satisfaction and worker protection is not.
