Michael W. Moore died suddenly in a car accident on April 16, 2018 in Victoria, Texas at the age of 69. He was born August 30, 1948 in Houston, Texas to Havard Clyde and Dorothy Irene (Brown) Moore.
He was raised in Alvin, Texas with 3 brothers, Mickey, Donnie and Clyde, and a sister, Debbie. He attended school in Alvin, graduating in 1966 where he was active in sports. He began working for Texas Department of Corrections in 1967 before joining the Army in April 1969. He was stationed in West Germany during that time and was released early, in November of 1971 to pursue his law enforcement career in corrections, before being honorably discharged in April of 1975. He attended Sam Houston State University and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Corrections in 1976 while working for the Texas prison system. During his 32 year correctional career, he worked in three different state correctional facilities. He worked for more than two decades in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice where he earned the name “Momma Moore” and rose from correctional officer to regional director in 1985, with the majority of that time in Brazoria County. His positions included personnel and training lieutenant, industrial supervisor, lieutenant, captain and major of correctional officers as well as warden of a maximum security prison. In 1995, he was recruited by South Carolina to lead the prison system as the director of the Department of Corrections. He then went to the Florida Department of Corrections as the Secretary in 1999 before retiring in 2003 and returning home to Goliad, Texas, where he was involved in the community.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Havard and Dorothy Moore and daughter, Angela Winget. He is survived by daughters, Kathy Cunningham of Huntsville, Texas and Michelle Bagwell of Clear Lake, Texas, son, John Moore of Alvin, Texas, and grandchildren, Michael Scott Bagwell, Jordan Bagwell, Faith Bagwell, Harley Winget, Shane Cunnigham, Wayne Cunningham, his beloved bulldog, Priscilla and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and close friends.
Two memorial services were held: April 21, 2018 at Skyview Baptist Church in Alvin, Texas and April 27, 2018 at Country Fellowship Church in Goliad, Texas.
The family of Mike would request donations in his name to be made to the American Legion Ewell Comption Post #193 (P O Box 51 Goliad, TX 77963).
