Like I said before, let me set the hiring standards. Of course who already have a correctional officer job will be grandfathered in. They have 2yrs to meet the physical requirements which would be similar to DPS physical standards.
When TDCJ starts using a hiring system like the Police, then we may see the system clean up. Ex: 1 Credit Check, 2. 5 to 10yr background check, 3. Pass Physical Requirements and be tested annually, 4. Psychological Testing and 5. Last but not least the medical aspect:
Medical Disqualifiers
The following medical conditions may disqualify an applicant. Determinations will be made on a case-by-case basis, after careful consideration of each applicant’s particular medical situation.
* Any chronic degenerative or demyelinating neurological disease (such as amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis [Lou Gerhig’s disease], or multiple sclerosis, etc.).
* Any disease that treatment requires constant, multiple daily testing and medication adjustments (such as “brittle diabetes”).
* Any complex seizure disorder.
* Uncontrolled high blood pressure.
* Significantly abnormal stress EKG suggesting coronary artery disease.
* Evidence of complex or multiple psychotropic drug therapy.
* Applicants must possess a sense of smell in order to function as a police cadet or officer.
* Visual acuity must be at least 20/200 uncorrected (both eyes) and 20/30 corrected (both eyes); color vision and night vision deficiency may be a disqualifier.
* Hearing loss not greater than:

# 30 DB at 1000cps
# 50 DB at 2000cps
