Re: Unreadable page
Posted by Bert Hickman on 4/21/2004, 12:35 pm, in reply to "Unreadable page" Hello John, Sorry about that, and thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I can't seem to recreate the problem here in either Netscape or IE. There are actually two Lichtenberg pages on the site - one is in the "A Bit of Theory" section and the other is in the "Stuff for Sale" section. Which page seems to be causing the problem? Does the problem occur on the main site, the mirror site, or both? Also, whose browser software are you using, and is your browser default "colors" setting set to always use the colors and background specified by the web page? You may want to try clearing your browser's cache and then reloading the page - sometimes an incomplete or corrupted copy of a web page may have gotten loaded. Thanks for the feedback and good luck! -- Bert --

I am not sure what you mean by "mirror site". : Also, whose browser software are you using, Netscape. and is your browser default I am not up on computers so much of what you have said is beyond me. BTW, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, we call them "beam trees". Thanks for the help. John Grant

Re: Unreadable page
Posted by Bert Hickman on 4/25/2004, 7:25 am, in reply to "Re: Unreadable page" Hi John, With Netscape activated, check the following Netscape settings: To clear the cache, go to Edit, Preferences, Advanced,Cache, and press the "Clear Cache" button - this will clear out any possibly corrupted old web pages in the browser's cache (a temporary storage area for previously viewed pages and images). Hopefull, doing the above will correct the problem. Also, you can get a similar one-page explanation in PDF format by linking to this URL: This is the firt time I've heard of the Lichtenberg Figures being called Beam Trees. Do you happen to know what the beam energy happened to be on the Varian Clinac machine? We rent beam time on industrial facilities and irradiate the plastic using 3-5 MEV. Best regards, -- Bert --

Re: Unreadable page
Posted by John Grant on 4/25/2004, 10:18 am, in reply to "Re: Unreadable page" --Previous Message-- I will try your sugestionds on Netscape. Clinacs come in a number of energy ranges up to 15 mev. We were using a 6 mev machine and had to put a 1/4 inch sheet of Masonite on top of the plastic to get the electrons to stop in the middle of a sheet of 1 inch plastic. BTW, we do not expose the plastic until it discharges on its own. We strike it with a well grounded center punch where we want the base of the tree to be. Not all Clinacs will allow you to extract the electron beam. Some are used only to produce X-rays by hitting a heavy foil window at the end of the accelerator. John Grant
