Using more turns increases the secondary's inductance and lowers the coil's operating frequency. The lower frequency reduces skin effect losses. Lower frequency operation also tends to make longer sparks for reasons that are not completely understood. The number of turns is not really very critical, and good performing coils have been built with from 1000 - 3000 turns. You want to make your secondary winding between 24" and 30" long. This will give you between 1100 and 1350 turns if you use #24 AWG, closely wound, and you'll need between 1.2 and 1.5 pounds of wire. Good luck on your coil! -- Bert --
