: Is there a way to create a circuit that can do this?
: I was told that a step-up transformer was required but I can't see one
: listed anywhere.
: thanks.

: Hi Mike,
: It is indeed possible, but it takes more than just a transformer. For
: example, most stun guns use an oscillator (called an inverter) to
: transform the battery's DC voltage to an AC voltage which then drives a
: small step-up transformer. The output is changed back to DC in order to
: charge an electrolytic energy storage capacitor to a moderately high
: voltage (say 350-450 volts). The inverter circuit is similar to the
: charging circuit used in an electronic flash circuit for cameras. The
: fully charged capacitor is then suddenly discharged into the primary of
: another high voltage step-up transformer (called a pulse transformer)
: using a transistor or SCR switch. This generates a high voltage pulse on
: the output of the HV transformer. Most stun guns output tens of
: thousands of volts - an any ads indicating 300-500 kV handheld units are
: simply advertising garbage.
: However, by using a large capacitor and a suitably designed oil immersed
: HV pulse transformer or a high performance ignition coil (HEI, Accel,
: Malory), 100,000 volts can easily be achieved from a small 9 volt
: battery. The output will not be a steady 100,000 volts, but instead will
: be in the form of high voltage pulses or spikes. And the pulses may only
: occur every 5-20 seconds since the HV capacitor must be recharged
: between shots.
: Be aware that many communities have made stun guns or stun devices
: illegal. And please remember that high energy pulse circuits have the
: capability to severely shock or even kill you. So, if you are not
: familiar with high voltage and electronic design, do NOT make this your
: first (or your last?) electronics project.
: Following is a site that shows some schematics for a number of styles:
