High Voltage Transformer used to make Strong Magnet?

I have a 30kV Transformer that operates at 30mA, and I was originally going to use it in my Tesla coil project, but it is not going to happen now. I am curious about one thing though. When I was a kid, I would always build tiny magnets out of an iron nail with wire wrapped around it and a battery.
Is there any way I could do this same thing with my transformer and a large piece of iron? How would one go about hooking up the 2 secondary posts?
