I took my dog to work today, as Mum had an appointment with Mental Health Services for an assessment. Auntie was supposed to go with her, I wasn't needed. So off we went to work, me and Puppy.
Had an interesting day at work, the technology was playing up, which freaked my class out and made an hour and a half lesson into just over two hours. Got wet on the way to and from work, which stressed the puppy out.
Then I got home, to a panicked neighbour who had seen an ambulance (the transport kind, not the emergency kind) parked outside our door, with the men banging and shouting to get in. The window was open and the TV on, so they knew someone was inside. This went on for about half an hour, and eventually the ambulance driver phoned his office to ask what to do. They must have given him our phone number.
Meanwhile the neighbour, who suffers from angina and breathing difficulties, was having kittens over the thought of my mother lying cold and dead on the floor somewhere in here. He wasn't best pleased when the ambulance went away, stating there wasn't anything else they could do. But as no-one had my number, that was it. The neighbour was sitting outside his house when I got home, waiting for me!
I got in, found Mother smoking like a chimney in the kitchen (as usual). Asked her what the hell was going on. She insisted she didn't hear anyone knocking or ringing, and no-one came for her. Asked her about Auntie - she apparently "had problems" and couldn't come over. She did admit that "someone from the clinic" phoned her, and she told them she wasn't coming.
I phoned Auntie, who didn't even know Mum had an appointment. She'd been and gone earlier today, with Mum's pension and some shopping. Phoned the clinic, just in time before it closed. Apparently, not getting any answer at the door, the driver managed to get through on the phone - Mother apparently told him to "#### off" and there was no way she was going anywhere.
For an 86 year old who is apparently mentally far gone, and unable to look after herself, she can scheme like Catherine De Medici!
I'm phoning back tomorrow to make her a new appointment. And this time I'm going with her!
