Does your machine have weaving brushes? If it does make sure to have them engaged. Also, make sure the machine is not set to hold the needles put in E position.
The cast-on you are trying to do is usually a Studio/Silver reed cast on. Brother machines usually have you start with all needles or every other needle in B position, then knit one row, then hang the cast on comb. Then continue knitting. I much prefer the Studio cast on, but it doesn't always work on Brother machines.
