To free the spools (memory drums) apart from removing all the wool that's caught in them, you could try heating them with a hairdryer to soften the old grease that's in them, rocking them from side to side until they work free.
You could spray a little WD40 into them to break the grease down. Once the drums are free you should probably re-grease or oil them.
