Hi again,
gee, I'm slow replying. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions. Went with eBay in the end and although I've read quite a bit of negative stuff about the USM, I love it! It knits all the yarn that I bought years ago thinking I could hand-knit it (yeah right! 
) that my other knitting machines just refuse.
