Since Halloween is fast approaching, I will tell you a true spooky story that happened to me. The timing is appropriate for all Hallows eve.
I was recommended by a customer to do some work for an elderly couple in Manhattan. They must have been in their 70's and were husband and wife. I was pre-warned beforehand that they were a very unusual couple and were very secretive. I ask why they were so secretive, I was told that they housed the largest library in the world on the occult. It was obvious that if word got out they might be in danger from many types of people. They only let people into their home that were recommended by others who they trusted. In my case, I knew an attorney close to the couple.
When I got there, I ran the bell and it seemed much like any other brownstone apartment in the city. I believe, if my memory is correct, that it was located in the east side of Manhattan someplace in the 40's, or 50's. In reality, I think I have blocked out the location in my mind. It was a four story building with two other tenants on the third and fourth floors. I could tell this by the names on the buzzers. It was obvious that the couple I was going to visit occupied the first and second floors along with the basement. They must have been the owners and likewise the landlord of the building.
A gentleman answered the door and eagerly invited me in, as he knew the appointed pre-arrangement time I was supposed to show up at their home. We walked down a dark mahogany corridor into the kitchen and small eating area. The other doors from the corridor to the living and dining rooms were sealed off. We spoke about business and he asked if I needed to see the other rooms. Obviously, I was curious and said, "sure". The living room, parlor and dining rooms had been converted to shelving filled with books. Some of the books looked like they were hundreds of years old, some much older. I was afraid to touch anything, as I might damage one of the manuscripts. Many of the books were bound in leather, some were crudely made, others where just what appeared to be scrolls. I asked the elderly gentleman how many books he had on the occult and he smile and said, "everything". I was taken back a little by that statement, but believed it might surely have been true. To me it was possible, he also might of had books on the second floor and in the basement. I wasn't certain. His most important collection, according to him, he housed on the first floor in the converted living room and dining areas because of humidity and temperature conditions.
When the nice older gentleman left the room to speak to his wife and answer the phone, I was left alone in the middle of the largest collection of occult books on the planet. Here was information written down for the ages. Thousands of years of original writings by priests, religious authorities, occult members, witches, warlocks, teachers and local officials. It was spooky, to say the very least. I'm not one to become overly frightened, but this was an exception. The room was very dark and I thought something had brushed up against me, but I was all alone! I got goose bumps and I began to get frightened. Fortunately for me, the library owner returned and I told him of my experience where I thought something had slightly nudged, or pushed me and I was alone. He smiled and said "it happens to him and his wife all the time." When he said that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up!
When I was finished with my business, I couldn't wait to leave. I felt this was no place for the likes of me! I was told by the elderly gentleman to please not tell anyone the exact location of his occult collection, as his life and his wife's life might be in danger. He stated very few people knew of the existence of the world's most complete collection of occult books and writings. Many people would love to have gotten into his collection for as many reasons as there are grains of sand. Some people would opt to destroy the library, others to gain information on the occult. I promised I would never utter a word of his location (for fear of my own life, if nothing else, because of the crazies in our society). Forty years have passed and I suspect both the library and its owner are long gone, but who knows!! The library my still exist with the elderly couple as guardians for the writings of occult. For the life of me, I could never find the location again.

For those who might be late comers to this board, Dory was a poster who we will remember as one who gave of herself so others survivors might smile. She always kept this board moving with her inspirational poems, jokes and riddles. Most will give Dory credit for energizing this board. She was an inspiration to everyone on this board. In that spirit, let us
continue to post in Dory’s memory so she might smile down on us and give us the same inspiration. Therefore, we have named the board, Dory's Board, in her memory. 11/11/01 (Dory was the first to call attention to the significance of 9/11, re: WTC tragedy, i.e. 911 for emergency). Let me be the first to note all the ones in the above date, indicating she was No. 1 on our board.
