Good morning SJ...Sorry for your diagnosis. The decision is tough. I actually had both. I initially had a lumpectomy and after chemo, I had a bi-lateral mastectomy. I made that choice for fear of recurrence. There are several factors when removing breast drastically reduces your chance of recurrence. Being diagnosed at 45 or under, being triple negative, family history or positive for BRCA mutation...and the main thing is the cancer is contained in the breast and hasn't gone to the lymph nodes. 3 of those factors were me..45/triple negative/contained in breast (early diagnosis). My surgeon didn't suggest the surgery, he just went over those factors with me. I discussed it with a different surgeon and she supported the first surgeon. I considered myself blessed to have been diagnosed early enough to reduce my risk of recurrence with the additional surgery and I made the decision to remove both breast & I do not regret it. I haven't read the other post but I am sure you have received several opinions. The choice is very personal and there is no right or wrong decision. Pray for peace and then go with what gives you peace. Blessings to you!
