I agree with the other ladies...I didn't have a choice...at my 1st Dr. appt he stated I needed all 3 (surgery/chemo/radiation)...my tumor was 5 cm so I had to get chemo 1st in order to shrink it to get surgery...as a nurse I heard alot of scary stories from patients regarding chemo, but I was advised if I wanted to live, I would need to do it...it was basically a "no-brainer"...but I was surprised how doable it was...I contemplated a holistic approach, etc, etc, in the beginning but I also did not want to be terminal down the road and regret I didn't do everything possible to treat the cancer...I am doing great and happy I didn't let my fears get in the way..
It is a personal decision...perhaps you can talk to other survivors who have been through chemo (like us!
)...I was mostly afraid of throwing up but I NEVER did...they give you great meds to counteract the side effects...I lost my hair, etc...but everything's back to normal, just to let you know....the side effects are only temporary, but life can go on for years...I also considered each stage of treatment as an added insurance policy to increase my odds of surviving and reduce the chances of recurrence (radiation lowered that risk from 30% to less than 5%, another no-brainer!)...
ask lots of questions so you can make the best possible decision...keep us posted!!
