I did the same thing that Janet did. People would say "I had a cousin, friend, aunt, etc. that had cancer....". I would interrupt and say "continue if it's a good story and shut up if it's not". They got it after awhile. But I do think that people don't know what to say. I remind myself all the time about how I would react if the roles were reversed. If my friend, cousin, aunt, etc. had cancer. How would I have reacted to that news BEFORE I had cancer?
It's hard for everyone. Just don't allow people to say what you don't want to hear. Be your own advocate.
