Since I was treated in a cancer facility that is also a hospital, I was in a surgical unit. I was given sedation so there was no pain though I was awake. It took about 15 minutes, I think. My activities (dancing, bicycling, tennis, etc.) were restricted for the first four weeks so the area could heal properly (I couldn't get it wet), but after that, there were no restrictions. I got used to the port immediately because, at that point, there is a lot going on (tests, chemo, hair loss, etc,), and you just move on quickly. I started chemo one or two days after the port placement, even though the area hadn't healed. This is perfectly normal since the port still functions even when the area hasn't healed yet. I'm sure you will be fine. Hope that helps. Hugs & prayers, Mary
