I had a lumpectomy too for my 2.5 cm tumor, and the doctor checked the nodes which is standard. Your surgeon will go in and not only take the tumor but also get what they call the margin. That is the area surrounding the tumor. I was also a nervous wreck. I worked myself up into such a state that I thought I would have a heart attack and then surgery for breast cancer would not happen. However, the surgery and recovery was definitely not what I expected. I had pain killers on hand but all I needed was Tylenol and a bag of frozen peas for the little pain. After a couple of days, I was fine. What is important to note here is that I am the biggest baby and whiner ever born. Once your surgery is over and the results come back, you will meet with your oncologist and make a plan.
