I totally agree, Penny, and you have EVERY RIGHT to be frustrated AND to vent. I imagine they worry about exploitation by researchers, but given all the controls and regulations they put on this kind of research, I think they could minimize abuses while allowing patients in dire positions to make that choice - I feel like it should be your right. That's why I think this guy was so bad-ass, cuz he had the resources and knowledge to take matters into his own hands.
I actually heard that there was a researcher successfully working on something like this back in the 20s or 30s but his work was squashed after he refused to sell his work or something - the FDA shut him down (my details here are very loose, but it was something shady along these lines). More frustration - I despise how money and politics can rule this research game.
