I want to second, third actually, what Penny and Jenni said. Statistically, the chance of being clear of cancer, whichever treatment, with DCIS is above 99%. For anyone the chance of recurrance is the same with lumpectomy+rads as it is with mastectomy.
I totally understand your fear but as was said above you need to consider all the factors before making your decision. This is a very tough thing to do when you are frightened. I had invasive ductal and lobular cancer just over a year ago and went with lumpectomy and radiation.
One thing for sure is the time before surgery is the very worst. It gets better soon. It really does. Once you start treatment you know that it is being taken care of and you feel so much better!
