My earliest memory of being drawn to smoking was years before I ever smoked a cigarette. I had to be 7 or 8 and my family belonged to a beach club which also had tennis courts. Now the details are fuzzy but basically one day I saw a young woman playing tennis, blonde, tall slim...well she finished a game and sat down with the guy she was playing with and he proceeds to give her a light. I watched her drag hard on the long all-white cig and the perform what I would later come to learn was snap inhale. She opened her mouth and a huge ball of smoke appeared and then was instantly sucked in. I remember seeing a look of pleasure and satisfaction on her face and then she tilted her head back and exhaled a long stream of smoke slowly and she watched the smoke as it flowed out of her. I watched, fascinated, as she repeated this drag after drag. Now this was 1970 or 71 and while it was nothing like today there was still quite a bit of anti smoking propaganda especially towards kids my age. We got the lectures in school and at home. (both parents smoked BTW "Do as I say not as I do") And I remember thinking there must be something about smoking if she (and just bout every adult I knew) were doing it. And the way SHE was doing it was so incredibly attractive, and she obviously was thoroughly enjoying it, though I had no idea at the time what a fetish was, I look back now and I know that is where it all started for me. Next: My smoking life begins.
