Yes, DEFIANCE is my unifying theme throughout most of my expressed and shared feelings in posting here.
I've come to believe that there is a TRINITY in how we see ourselves in the smoking milieu:
THREAT: I know that the short term pleasures and gains of my smoking comes with a long term erosion of my health;
GAMBLE: I begin and persist in smoking with full knowledge of the consequences of the THREAT because I monitor the decline in my health watchfully, and I assume that a day may come when my reduced capacity for living demands that I stop....but the GAMBLE is not knowing when that time is, nor what would be the sign that cannot be denied;
DEFIANCE I obliterate my doubts through my DEFIANCE of the mounting risk(s) and personal arrogance in feeling indestructable or somehow not subject to the same guidelines as the rest of the smoking community.
The same challenges hit me that hit your associates during particularly vicious bronchial infections, and like all of us, I reevaluate my smoking posture while coughing and generally clearing out my chest. But as the symptoms lessen, I defiantly resume my traditional smoking patterns, claiming that the un-ignorable sign from above has not yet appeared.
