Depends on why you are smoking them I think. I mean if it were purely for the nicotine, then you could argue that if they could make a safe cigarette, the product would still be effective.
But- I doubt anyone smokes just for the nicotine and I've been thinking about this lately (wow- on the same wavelength again) mainly because of these two popular science articles:

Even if they managed to make cigarettes safer- they still wouldn't be safe.
And if they were safe, would I derive the same pleasure from them? The answer I came up with- probably not. Part of the attraction is that you knowingly do something bad for you when you smoke.
