Hi Nick,
It sounds like it may be time to break out the deconstruction tools.
First of all, when you read something that seems a bit beyond the pale conceptually, but that really stimulates you, take a moment to stop and try to identify whatever idea is causing this reaction. Try not to judge it, but to simply see it for what it is, and to recognize that the idea is important to you for some reason.
And second, start asking yourself a lot of questions. It's O.K. It's just you and your thoughts, and no one else ever has to know.
What do living deeply tar stained lungs mean to you?
Why? ...
I think that the more you identify the ideas that provoke such strong emotional reactions in you, and the more you allow yourself to just think about why these things affect you as they do, and the more you do it in a completely honest and relaxed way, not only will you probably begin to feel a lot less guilty, but once you begin to deconstruct things a little, you will probably also find even more pleasure with a little understanding of how meaning can connect things in some very interesting ways, sometimes.
