Thanks for responding MGF - I always enjoy hearing your thoughts.
Quite the contrary to how I may have come off, I do not think that the risk is primarily suitable for those in their 20's and 30's as opposed to those older. In fact, I envy and adore smokers in their 40's and beyond. To me, and with respect to those who willingly admit how much they enjoy smoking, that lifetime commitment and the conscious or subconscious embracing of The Risk is extremely stimulating.
As for me, at over 15 pack-years of deep inhales, I think I'm easing into the danger zone, although I probably have a ways to go. That said, I would be thoroughly surprised if I haven't done some amount of permanent damage to my lungs at this point.
As for quitting as I approach the danger zone - no, I'm in this for the long haul. The distinction I was attempting to draw between younger and older smokers is that though I love The Risk, the longer one's smoking history, the more The Risk is accentuated. And that excites me.
