Inference about the unknown is based on previous experience generally. Our concepts of what belongs and what does not belong in a certain concept of a given appearance is highly influenced by society.
Smoking, especially of late, has the connotation in society of being "bad". It is legal and yet practically outlawed therefore those that still smoke can sort of be seen as "rebels".
One might infer that this woman, in her bad ass leather and vampy makeup, is a bit of a "bad" girl and therefore you might go on to infer that she might be "the type of girl" that smokes.
But quite honestly- this idea that only "bad" or "rebellious" people smoke is erroneous. Smokers can come from any demographic and can be any type of person from your straight laced law abiding citizen to the person with questionable morals. I guess this is why my favorite pictures of people smoking are those of people that do not fit the image that society has created of the smoker. That is my take at least...
