The usual day to day self destruction does get a bit old now and then, doesn't it?
Shortly after I met Marcus and we started dating, I noticed one day that he had switched from his usual Marlboro Reds to unfiltered Pall Malls. I asked him about them and he explained that he occasionally liked to smoke something a little stronger. I tried one and found that I liked the harsher taste and texture as a special treat. What I also liked was that even though I'd been smoking for more than half my life at that point, knowing that I was deliberately inhaling significantly more tar and nicotine than usual gave me the same sort of naughty little thrill that simply smoking gave me when I was much younger and hadn't been smoking as long. I still smoke unfiltered Pall Malls from time to time, usually when Marcus does, and I get the same gratification. It isn't the damage that we enjoy, it's knowing that were doing it.
