This whole thread is extremely interesting. I have to admit my reasoning for why I began smoking was much driven by when I was at a college I used to attend until 2 years ago, and wondering why smoking friends of mine enjoyed smoking so much.
Unfortunately(and I was a little afraid to disappoint those friends and tell them I smoke), I secretly began experimenting with smoking myself without telling them. Not surprisingly, if I were to start smoking all over again(and rewind back time to 2 years back), I would've just bummed cigarettes from those smoking friends I had at college, and told them upfront that I was now a smoker.
Stage 1- While I know this part of my 'start smoking' story will be gross to some(and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who did this before becoming a regular smoker), I would try to find mostly unsmoked cigarettes in ashtrays, and/or discarded packs with unsmoked cigarettes, and smoke them. This was also a stage when I did not inhale cigarette smoke, and on occasion would find the smell offensive, but very quickly stopped finding it offensive.
Stage 2- Discovered how to inhale cigarette smoke, and started to buy cigarette packs on occasion.
Stage 3- Finally mastered how to make nice cigarette smoking exhales.
Stage 4- Wondering ways to tell my friends and family(virtually all non-smokers, and my family was entirely made up of non-smokers, though my brother had smoked a few times in his life and chose not to take up the habit) I had now become a smoker, without offending them. Naturally, with a few exceptions among my most anti-smoking friends, all of my family found out on their own when I failed to let my guard down, and found at different times a pack of cigarettes in my jacket. *sigh*
Stage 5- I did finally have success telling the majority of my non-smoking friends that I am an infrequent smoker, and advanced to the point where I NO LONGER hide my smoking from others.
Well, that's the long story short of the stages I went through when I began smoking, and maybe this post will make up a little bit from when I promised 2 years ago to post my 'start smoking' story, but unfortunately did not succeed in remembering to post my story of how I started smoking.
