G'Day Nick,
I hope you slept well, and had pleasant dreams.
I think that it all depends on your mindset.
Some people have a passing curiosity with smoking, try it once or twice, decide that one or two experiments are enough to satisfy their curiosity, and that's that.
But for everyone else who begins smoking regularly, or semi-regularly, I think that there is something much more than a casual interest going on. I think that there is actually a point at which these people make a decision that they want to learn to be able to smoke "properly", as our British friends say. (Hi Lynne.
) In other words, they set a goal for themselves, and then set about achieving it.
Being able to smoke "properly" means being able to regularly and fully inhale significant drags of cigarette smoke without coughing, or without showing outward signs of distress, which means that the new smoker has to condition her / his lungs and body to do it, which requires deliberate effort, and the exposure of at least a pack or so of cigarettes.
Eventually, the pleasures of nicotine satisfaction reinforce the psychological pleasures of being able to be the Mistress / Master of one's own body, and a new essential element of Identity becomes established. (And someone like me comes along and wants to have a forum to talk about it.
)
So, I think that the experience of the first, second, third, etc. cigarettes all depends on your eventual intent, whether you are fully conscious of it or not.
