I've been so busy over this last week that I keep forgetting to reply to your message...sorry.
To me, direct inhales are to other, more leisurely inhales what doing shots are to savoring a glass of nice wine, and I personally prefer the latter to the former. I tend to be partial to either French or snap inhales, and do them pretty much all of the time. I think it's just like swishing a sip of wine with a bit of air around your mouth before swallowing, which maximizes the experience of the flavor and aroma.
The intense warmth and hit of a "shot" can be nice, but overall, I guess I prefer "the wine approach" to smoking...
