What you are failing to understand is that for the smoker it isn't all about addiction. Yes, addiction plays a role, but I honestly believe that most smokers would quit if the only reason they smoked was to satisfy their physical addiction to nicotine.
You see, we smoke because we enjoy it. We like the feel of the cigarette between our lips and the taste of the smoke in our mouth. We like inhaling and pulling the smoke into our lungs. We like deliberately risking our health. It is a deep-seated need that is much stronger than the physical grip nicotine has on us.
Also consider that part of being a smoker is not just accepting, but embracing the addiction. We are, in some ways, addicted to the addiction. In some ways, having to brave the elements to meet that need enhances the experience.
