I enjoy the long way/pack years header image a great deal. It brings to mind one of the attractions to smoking I find most alluring and subtle: its gradual, silent, and very real effect on one’s health. Even though I regard myself to be in good health overall, I know that deep within my chest is the exception. My lungs are corrupted and tired, fouled by the poisonous smoke I have deliberately forced into them. Since human lungs do not have pain receptors, I cannot feel the smoke in them. I cannot feel the irritation caused by the tar that coats them and the thousand other chemicals I repeatedly inhale: But I know it’s there. I put it there - on purpose. I’m 38 years old and have smoked roughly two packs a day since my late teens. Allowing for what I smoked between when I started and when I graduated from high school, as my daily consumption gradually grew from a couple of cigarettes a day to my present very comfortable amount, I have smoked 40+ pack years. I have come a long way, indeed. V notes: Just added the image link, and made the subject line more descriptive. Thanks MGF!
