I think its always sad when someone who holds strong passionate beliefs about something (as your friend obviously does about smoking) finally "recants" or gives up due to weariness or disillusionment, or simply becasue she is tired of being different
its like seeing a committed vegetarian giving up and starting to eat meat again, or seeing any type of idealist finally being overcome by cynicism
almost a form of apostasy
