I agree with your analysis completely Casey!
Smoking imposes something very foreign on our most basic rhythm of life and most immediate need for survival - respiration; so I think that we all tend to react to smoking on a deeply primitive level. The act of making breath visible with smoke is quite dramatic, and in it's unnaturalness it alternately suggests the profane or the holy, or perhaps even both...
