For the time being, I'm out of ideas, Ben. Sorry.
Since standard holders aren't what you want, and glass tubing would be difficult to come by, and here's one final thought on that, if ordering domestically is a problem, would it be possible to order from overseas?
You could always get friendly with a science teacher…
I would check out the glassblowing aspect, wether you pay someone to make you a peice, or take it up youself as a hobby. In the case of the former, you could spin any sort of story you want, frinstance, you want to present a gift to a significant other. In the case of the latter, hey, it's a hobby, and if you're any good at it, it might earn you some cash, and of course you could experiment to your heart's content.
The only other thing you could try, is locating a peice of glassware, and modifying it to suit your needs, a hollow-stemmed glass, a vase, these can be had at thrift shops, but it's a case of being in the right place at the right time. And here's a thought, Garage sales, local markets, trash and treasure meets, local fetes…
Anyway, keep us informed of how it goes, since I have a simmilar interest, I'm keen to see how it works out for you.
