Sorry for the delayed reply and for the lack of clarity in my earlier post! (There's a reason I'm a practitioner and not a teacher) The individual tract length to the outer alveolar bundles is somewhat shorter in the upper lobes and the smoke does enter them before entering the lower lobes. This phenomenon, along with the smoke being more concentrated as it enters the upper lobes causes discoloration (and damage) to occur in the upper lobes before the lower lobes.
