Posted by vesperae Whether the smoker has actually deluded herself into believing this or not, I think that this tired litany is really about deflecting and refocusing AS disapproval by shifting the reality of personal responsibility to the abstract faceless menace of the tobacco industry. Smoking is a procession of literally thousands and thousands and thousands of moments, in each of which the smoker makes a choice to continue smoking, and in each of which she has the opportunity to make the choice to stop. But you can never successfully quit smoking unless you are completely honest with yourself about why you do it, why you enjoy it, and especially, unless you are completely honest about your responsibility for your own actions. By the way, if you haven't yet read "Anne's Choice" by Richard, you're in for a real treat! * * * * *v

"I want to quit, and I'm trying to quit, but I'm just so helpless because I can't break the evil and pre-meditated plot of the tobacco industry to hook me on nicotine."
The standard denial trip.![]()
