Posted by Freelancefagger The cultural script goes something like this: all smokers would really like to quit (which makes them good people), but are unable to do so because of addiction to nicotine (which is more powerful than addiction to heroin). I believe this script exists because policymakers and social commentators don't want to face the fact that not all smokers truly want to quit. This would force them into a deeper analysis of why people smoke and what constitutes a life well lived (which, as has been noted before, is more than clean lungs and longevity), and would make it harder for them to trumpet the "just say no" message to kids and other vulnerable groups. Thanks, V. I read through some of those posts and agree wholeheartedly with you that "nicotine addiction" is vastly overplayed as the reason people have trouble quitting smoking over the long term.
