They had a pre-existing image of themselves as a bad girl and smoking helps express this side of them. I would guess there are other young women who are more conflicted about this. They generally have a self-image of being a good girl and others think the same way of them. They may be a popular outgoing cheerleader type, or perhaps a quieter, more introverted good student type, nowhere in the realm of "bad girl". Sooner or latter many of the good girls will be in a social situation where they are tempted to try smoking, some will enjoy it, some will get hooked and become fulltime smokers. I wonder if it is uncomfortable for some of these women to out themselves as smokers, especially to non-smoking friends and family? Smoking, like nothing else (that's legal), will change a girl from wholesome to bad girl in others eyes. Some of the new smokers will get caught in the act. For other women the enjoyment and addiction of smoking must reach a point where they just don't care who see's them smoking anymore, at that point they are a changed person. I would imagine that some of these new smokers, perhaps unexpectedly, feel a certain freedom and liberation from shedding their former good girl image. The cigarette then becomes a gateway to a whole new world of possibilities including other bad girl behavior.
In a recent post John touched on the bad girl aspect of smoking. Although it's not a health issue, is there a sublime appeal for young women to make the transition from good girl non to bad girl smoker?
