Posted by vesperae The other thing that I wanted to add to my previous remarks to Pete, and that I think you might agree with me on, is the idea that for most smokers who really enjoy smoking (beyond any SF considerations), a little bit of Risk reflection goes a long way towards reinforcing the Taboo / Forbidden Fruit appeal. I think that for most, consciously experiencing and working through the physical trauma of starting to smoke is sufficient to plant the seed of the Sublime Desire to smoke in the future. Seeing a graphic AS PSA, experiencing a bad cold, a news report on the health perils of smoking, a social brush with death or illness related to smoking, etc., can only serve to either reinforce the Sublime Desire, or to finally provoke a conscious rejection of it, resulting in the urge to quit. What I am getting at is that I think that it doesn't take much more than starting to smoke to get the ball rolling, and it doesn't take much to keep it rolling, but it takes a lot to stop it once it's underway.
