I also think we need to consider that on some level, for all smokers, smoking is a deeply personal activity. (One of the most personal activities one can do socially, in public, and not get arrested
) Part of the young woman's discomfort may have been with the conflict of enjoying a physically harmful activity that is increasingly frowned upon by society and not feeling as though it would be regarded as appropriate for her to say so. There was undoubtedly also a degree of discomfort with being asked to openly examine what she is doing to her body by smoking. Just as Marcus has commented that has passed by opportunities to have a high resolution lung scan (As have I. I have also declined to see my chest X-rays) we know its bad for us and take delight in taking the Risk and, in some cases, noticing the subtle changes in our bodies, but we don't really want to face reality in that much detail and clarity.
