It’s an interesting little video. The first thing that I noticed, unless I missed something, is that at not point did she say she smokes because she enjoys it. I think your assessment is probably correct. Many of the patients with whom I work are initially ill at ease talking about how much they smoke, when they started, their feelings about quitting, etc. until they learn that I am also a smoker. Frequently it quickly becomes clear that the patient has and does give a fair amount of consideration to the health effects of smoking and his/her addiction. While they may publicly deny smoking as much as they do or that they are beginning to feel smoking’s effects, or that they are as addicted as they are, these are things that they have had to admit to themselves. Where I see the personal denial playing a role is in the Risk and effect acceptance required to continue engaging in such destructive behavior.
