I dont think when she said “she wouldnt make it” i made it very clear that she wasnt solely refering to her smoking, but more generally to the pace and stress of her life which of course her smoking is an element. But i do insist that i dont think she has that ‘fatalist’ streak that she is resigned to die or suffer heavily from her smoking. I really dont think that is the case at all. If i took her and few of her smoking girlfriends and asked them how they see themselves in their fifties and sixties i bet you they would all paint a fairly rosy picture as would many smokers. None would probably say they think they will be smoking statistic by then and if they did it would be bravado i´m sure of it. And yet statitsisc show that at least one of them will die prmaturely from her habit. Each one knows the risk, but each one knows that risk doesnt apply to them, not really. It´s for the woman across the street, the workmate, the friend of a friend but not them. My girlfriend is no different in that. That denial is a must. It´s really what makes smoking in the face of all the evidence possible. I cant think of any smokers who really believe it will be them, not truly. Here of course there are many who are much more in tune with the self-destructive nature, but i´m not at all sure that the views we express here can be so easily extrapolated to the general smoking population? In truth i actually enjoy the denial aspect. I really do. It´s one of the great themes in my stories. A woman taking the risk that she is convinced that for her is no risk at all only to find that her number is tragically and prematurely up. I love that theme and yes i love applying that fantasy to my real life becuase in so many ways my girlfriend is so often the type of character that populates my fiction. Pete
