
Posted by Marcus on March 14, 2007, 2:22 pm, in reply to "Re: "St. Nicotina"" Even though I cannot begin to support a pregnant woman continuing to smoke, in full awareness that she is potentially harming her fetus, it is not my place to judge her for doing so. It is her decision. I’ve had a couple of friends over the years who quit smoking for the nine months they were pregnant only to resume as soon as possible after the child was born. In both cases, they found quitting physically difficult, but not psychologically hard at all because they were motivated to do so for the sake of their child. I can’t help but believe that they must have some dark attraction to smoking to resume it after having quit for nine months and having overcome the physical addiction. I distinctly remember one of them saying, “It’s like becoming a smoker all over again.”
While pregnant smokers don’t do anything for me at all, I do enjoy this header image. It presents the “wrongness” or “being bad” attraction of smoking quite vividly. The combination of a nun not only being pregnant, but smoking as well is a delightful mixture of contrasts.
