It is the sentencing of Bobby Garrett. His wife asked that friends of his show up for suuport, not for what he did but the friend he was. Regardless of what Bobby did he was a good guy who was there to back you up. Bobby got greedy, got caught and now he is paying for it. What I find interesting is how Reggie found out about the Email request for support, I did not see his name on the "To" list.
Another point of interest is who does he think he is, and what gives him the right to threaten anyone who chooses to support the Garrett family, which includes a current member of this department. It is important to remember that the choices Bobby made will forever effect him, as well as his wife and extended family who will try to learn to live their life void of Bobby G.
The Email, sent by his wife requested a show of support for them during his sentencing. No one is claiming foul, she is just asking for support for she and Bobby as he is sentenced.
People who want to attend should be allowed to do so without any implied or obvious threats, to support Donna and/or Bobby. - Re: Reggie's Message

Here is what really bothers me. OK, Bobby was a thief. You are being told that fact and told to NOT support him as a friend. NOW, remember recently when a certain Lt. Col. (in the Chief's office) civilian friend got caught stealing from the Police Memorial Fund? He was majorly supported by that Lt. Col. who stated that his friend had a bad drug and personal problems.
And, you never heard another word about this issue. Was he even indicted? I know for a fact that when the media tried to investigate this theft, a certain Lt. Col. in the Chief's office refused to give any information.
What really bothers me is at least Bobby stole from criminals. This friend of a Lt. Col. stole from YOU and ME and our deceased brothers and sisters. This makes me sick! Why has that case not gone anywhere or made public? I'll tell you why, because a certain Lt. Col. assigned to the Chief's office was the chairman of the committee and should have been watching over all the money that he trusted his civilian friend to handle.

I agree with the heinousness of the Police Memorial Fund theft, however, trying to apply some of degree of severity is disingenuous. "At least Bobby stole from criminals," please! The alleged perpetrator in the Memorial Fund theft has not at this point been convicted of a crime, therefore, until guilt is established there is an assumption of innocence. Now, I'm not naive, all evidence thus far points towards his guilt. Bobby on the other hand has plead guilty and I assume he will address the court.
The alleged perpetrator in the Memorial Fund theft did not take an oath to serve and protect, Bobby did. Bobby violated the public trust and the very moral sanctity of our profession. For that alone he will be held to a higher standard and in Judge Webber's court, that you can be sure of.
The Memorial Fund theft was in fact publicized and is another in a long list of embarrassments our organization will have to endure.
As for Bobby's sentencing hearing, no one was told not to attend, only not to on duty, in uniform or wearing identification thereof. Absolutely, the organization should discourage this sort of show of support. The message will be received unfavorable not only by the general public, but by the courts and law enforcement in general.
Lastly, Bobby's wife did not send an invitation to "friends", she sent an invitation, by way of Department media, to a group of POLICE OFFICERS who happen to be friends. We can never separate our individuality from our profession,both are interchangeable.
When we stand in support as a group we stand as police officers. You will never be able to convince the general public otherwise.
I say continue to stand in solidarity for officers who have been accused like we have in the past, but not for those who by their own admission violated the sanctity of our beloved profession. - Re: Reggie's Message

My thought - BG was indicted by the Grand Jury for alleged felony theft. He wasn't found guilty in a court of law, he admitted to it in a court of law; and his admission to violating the law, also carried with it his acknowledgment that he violated the Police Officers Sworn Oath of Office. He disgraced our profession, our badge, our department and the legend that Police Officers are the "Good Guys" - the ones you can trust.
With that in mind, it would be a disgrace to the "good guys" and particularly humiliating to those who were killed-in-the-line-of-duty, many of which were wearing that same police uniform at the time of their death, to wear the police uniform and/or anything that would identify themselves as a Police Officer or that would lend itself as a "sign" that Police Officers support a thief.
BG betrayed the "police family" and doesn't deserve our support; but, I'd be willing to bet it would mean a lot to him and his family if their "friends" showed up Monday morning.
I'll always remember BG, who in the beginning of his career was a "good cop" who made more good decisions than bad ones; and I'll remember all the times I could count on him to have my back. Well Bobby, I'll be there Monday, up front and covering your back. I just won't be doing it in uniform.
PS It's not how many times you fall, but how may times you get up that matters.
PPS And don't think for one minute that the 6th floor won't be in/on/around the Court House armed with Canon's, the kind that shoots film, not bullets. So, be defiant if you must, but then also be prepared to suffer the consequences. - Re: Reggie's Message

What I will say you are wrong about, is that the civilian involved in the memorial fund case DID admit to his wrong doing and stated that he had personal problems and a drug problem (this is fact} so he is NOT innocent until proven guilty. We don't even know if the PD persued the case because he was a Lt. Col.'s friend. Secondly, he DID take the same oath BG did. He is a retired Policeman who became a civilian after he retired.

It is always the grunt who suffers the consequence. It doen't matter whether it is police or military. The Brass is never made an example of because of their political ties. When a scape goat is needed it is the grunt.
The FBI are political creatures as well. They do what politicians tell them to do. When they need to stamp out political corruption it is mostly the little guy. If not they would arrest every politician on the public pay roll. - Re: Reggie's Message

I understand both sides of the aisle here and their positions of whether to support BG or not. You can support the person while not condoning the act. What appalls me is that the first paragraph of Lt. Col. Harris's e-mail is a veiled threat to those that wish to support BG.
It isn't saying you can't, but the "strongly discourage" verbiage sends the message he wants to convey. I don't condone BG's behavior but I also don't believe he should be abandoned by his friends.
Lt. Col. Harris needs to consider BG's position because he could very soon be feeling the same heat. I just hope he doesn't take a bunch of coppers down with him. - Re: Reggie's Message
